I recently came across this term “cozy fantasy”. It took me a while to find out what it referred to but it turns out it is right up my alley. I’ve noticed lately that I get a little weary when I’m reading big epic fantasy series. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE epic giant fantasy, but lately all I want to do is curl up with something a little sweeter, kinder and less anxiety inducing. That’s what cozy fantasy is all about. Yes it still has magic, adventure and maybe a little craziness … but it is also usually more low stakes. It is character and relationship driven. To me it a book that qualifies as “cozy fantasy” means something that gives me the right vibes and helps me feel good. So I was hoping to use this post to share some of my favorite cozy reads and a few that I have on my TBR.
My TBR list is going to be a bit longer because I’m still new to this genre so I have a ways to go yet…
First … Cozy books I have read
Half a Soul and Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwater
I LOVE these books. Reading these is when I realized that this is exactly the vibe my heart is needing right now. Think Jane Austen x Howl’s Moving Castle. It’s Bridgerton without the explicit content and add some faeries. LOVE it.
The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune
These are not part of a series but I’m grouping them together because they are by the same author. I really have a soft spot for these books. They are my comfort reads. Full of found family (which is a theme I am fond of), LGBTQIA inclusive, sweet and tender but with magic and great storytelling. I recommend them to every single person that will listen to me talk about books.
Next … Cozy Fantasy TBR
Long Shadow by Olivia Atwater
When I tell you I CAN NOT WAIT for this book I am not kidding. It’s book three in the series and I am so excited. I have gotten the first two from Orbit Books (who I love) through their newsletter and I am hoping against hope that it will be offered in the beginning of July. *crosses fingers*.
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
According to everyone this is the definitive “cozy fantasy” book. A world weary orc barbarian decides she just wants to settle down and open a coffee shop. I mean everything about this sounds so lovely and fun. I can’t wait to start. I’m hoping to pick it up in the next couple of weeks.
Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons by Quenby Olson
I’m so excited about this one, I added it to my TBR a week ago, and this morning the author offered to send a copy to someone who would review … this is kismet! It’s about a spinster who becomes a “spinster and keeper of dragons”. As an unmarried blogger of a certain age this is really speaking to me. I’m so excited to get it and start reading!
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
This is another book recommended by cozy fantasy bloggers. A robot and a monk walk into a bar … Ok I don’t know if there is a bar, but they definitely build a friendship. Or at least that’s what I think happens. It is called optimistic and heart warming. That sounds good to me!
Well that’s what I’ve got so far. I hope to keep reading in this micro-genre for a good long while. If any of you have recommendations please pass them my way!
