I feel like whatever I pick here is not going to do full justice to the joy that is watching Our Flag Means Death. It’s ridiculous, heartfelt, exciting, adorable, and just so awesome.
I’ve chosen 4 books and some of them are not even about pirates for goodness sakes! But each of them has something in common with the show that makes me love them. So here are my read-a-likes.
DANGER! Pirates
(book 1 of 3)
This is my most pirate-y choice, because it’s about pirates. Probably one of the best pirate-y series out there, but is more on the serious side and not full of laughs. The pirate captain is truly a fascinating character. So worth it.
Heist-y pirates
The Lies of Locke Lamora – Scott Lynch
(book 1 of 3)
No pirates here, but it is funny as heck, and has a really great heist plot, so it kinda feels pirate-y. Only these guys are much better at it than our OFMD group.
Queer Pirate Luv
The House in the Cerulean Sea – TJ Klune
Ok, there are no pirates in this book either. But it does have one of my favorite queer love stories and I just plain adore this book. Plus one of the guys does wear an outfit kind of like Stede’s in the gif so I had to pick it.
Found family of pirates
(book 1 of 3)
Besides being a very very good pirate adventure story, this book series has really excellent character development. A lost pseudo-pirate learns to become a good sailor, find a family among his crew and captain, and there is a queer love story. So it fits in very well with the OFMD theme. I can’t recommend it enough.
Well there you go. That’s the list! They are all really wonderful books that I hope you will enjoy. They may have only very small connections to the tv series but they are all worth your time. Happy reading!
what a fun post! I recently started watching this show & your book picks are so good! Happy June ❤
