Fantasy Series to binge while Social Distancing

I mean, this is nuts right? It’s a little like living through a lesson about The Plague!

Now is when we could all use a little bit of an escape from reality. So I’m giving you a list of really great (and long) fantasy series to help when you’re stuck at home.

I didn’t pick anything too dark or heavy in tone. Books like the Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin are wonderful but can be a LOT right now. Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood is way too on the nose. So let’s go with really intriguing stories that you can sink into and soak up some time.

I am going to list all the books in each series in book order. Hope that helps!

Realm of the Elderlings

by Robin Hobb

  1. Assassin’s Apprentice
  2. Royal Assassin
  3. Assassin’s Quest
  4. Ship of Magic
  5. The Mad Ship
  6. Ship of Destiny
  7. Fool’s Errand
  8. The Golden Fool
  9. Fool’s Fate
  10. Dragon keeper
  11. Dragon Haven
  12. City of Dragons
  13. Blood of Dragons
  14. Fool’s Assassin
  15. Fool’s Quest
  16. Assassin’s Fate

Yes you read that right. 16 books!!! I LOVE a long book series and this is one of the best. I can’t recommend it enough. I guarantee you will be sobbing at the end, but it is also extremely satisfying.

Kingfountain Series

by Jeff Wheeler

  1. The Queen’s Poisoner
  2. The Thief’s Daughter
  3. The King’s Traitor
  4. Prequel: The Maid’s War
  5. The Hollow Crown
  6. The Silent Shield
  7. The Forsaken Throne
  8. Prequel: The Poisoner’s Enemy

I know this looks weird since I put prequels in among the book order but this is how the author recommends reading the series. It is also related to many other books by the author set in the same … universe I guess? It’s excellent, and actually reminds me a little of the books by Robin Hobb too. Really great epic fantasy if that is your jam!

The Stormlight Archive

by Brandon Sanderson

  1. The Way of Kings
  2. Words of Radiance
  3. Novella: Edgedancer
  4. Oathbringer

This is like the most epic-est of all epic fantasy. I know that was pathetic, but it’s one of those series where anything I say can’t begin to match up to what is accomplished with this series. I know 4 books aren’t much, but the fourth book alone is (I kid you not) 1,243 pages.

I like big books and I cannot lie.

Also, the next one in the series comes out this fall. You won’t be sorry if you start now.

Blackthorne & Grim

by Juliet Marillier

  1. Dreamer’s Pool
  2. Tower of Thorns
  3. Den of Wolves

Juliet Marillier is an author I just discovered last year and I could kick myself for not hearing about her earlier. I LOVE her books, they are very celtic and magical. Full of spells and faerie types. Three books is not a long series, and if you’re like me you will absolutely inhale them, but she has a long list of books to her name so I’m sure you will find more to read after this wonderful series is over.

by Leigh Bardugo

  1. Shadow and Bone
  2. Seige and Storm
  3. Ruin and Rising
  4. Six of Crows
  5. Crooked Kingdom
  6. King of Scars
  7. The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic

Another new discovery for me last year. I heard people talking about it, but didn’t decide to start reading until I heard about the Netflix series. I’m so glad I got into her books. She is truly fantastic. Easy to read, but full of depth and magic. LOVE these books. The last book of short stories are like delicious folk tales set in the world of the Grishaverse. Can’t wait for the tv show!

Plus one sci-fi series I can’t resist including … it’s touching and funny and the best kind of science fiction. Murderbot is a wonderful character. So far there are four novellas and one upcoming book. You will love this!

The Murderbot Diaries

by Martha Wells

  1. All Systems Red
  2. Artificial Condition
  3. Rogue Protocol
  4. Exit Strategy
  5. Network Effect

Thanks for reading. I hope you are all keeping well and sane while we are trying to self-isolate. If books have taught me one thing, it’s that we will come out the other end of this terrible adventure having learned a little and grown a lot. My best wishes are with you all, happy reading!

  1. Juliet Marillier is a favorite of mine. I’m actually jealous that you get to read her books for the first time! You should definitely read her Sevenwaters series ASAP. It’s sort of two mini-series so there are six in all. That should keep readers busy for a while!
