Book Traveling Thursday -2016 Fave

Book Traveling Thursdays is a group I found on Goodreads, you can visit them here! Every week, they post a new subject and you choose a book that fits the theme.  Then share covers for that book according to the following rules…

  1. Original cover
  2. Cover from your country
  3. Your favorite cover
  4. Your least favorite cover

It looks like a ton of fun!  So let’s start now.

This week’s theme: Choose a book that was a favorite in 2016.

I chose Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones.

I think most people are probably familiar with the anime version that came out of Studio Ghibli in 2004.  I love that movie, and while the story was changed a little, it did capture the whimsy and adventure of the book. I read the series for the first time this year and I really loved it. Here is the synopsis…

Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl’s castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there’s far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.

Original US Cover

Wow that’s pretty scary. A lot of the elements are present from the book, but the artwork has none of it’s charm. I say fail.

US edition

I like the color scheme and that it looks like a painting. I still kind of hate the scary face though. Why do they keep going back to that face?

Spanish Edition

Nice depiction of the castle. I like this one.

US Edition

How can you have a book called Howl’s MOVING CASTLE and then not show the castle? Are the letters supposed to represent the castle? It doesn’t work.

UK Edition

That is unfortunate. Not a fan of the artwork and style.

If you ever have a chance to see the anime or read the original books I fully recommend them. In fact, please enjoy the trailer!

  1. I ADORE THIS BOOK. And the movie. And well, everything associated with it. Calcifer is my spirit animal! 🔥
That first US cover and the U.K. covers are so unfortunate, though! I don’t really *mind* the cover without the castle, but the best one is that tan-ish US cover. By a long shot.
Well. I might need to reread This book tonight. 😜
